TRANSIENCE

Transience…
…as in shortness
impermanence
temporariness
ephemerality
fleetingness
momentariness
brevity

The state or quality of lasting only for a short time.

On a brief afternoon of August sunshine, I came across a small patch of wildflowers, grasses and seed heads. Large red bodied dragonflies were sunning themselves on the hot asphalt. As with most of this summer, thunderclouds were just in view and so I shut my eyes to take in the suns’ rays and became absorbed.

Three small memories locked away. Fossilised in my mind, to bring out on occasions, like insects encased in amber. To hold up to the light, to remember. Bringing home to me, how much we rely on these precious stones of the past and how much we lose, when the memories fade and we can no longer recollect them.

Since 2020 I have been documenting the slow decline of my husband with cognitive impairment, a long term project. Eidolon, released in March 2022, was a dark and meditative exploration of the split between the physical person with the ‘shadow being’ that is increasingly taking him over.

However, there are moments of light, where seemingly the simple pleasures of a summer afternoon walk take on far greater importance.

Memories degrade with the passing of time and the length of the time is getting shorter and shorter.

Transience is about those fleeting moments, the gems we hold up to the light that hold small but significant memories.
