“I watched a silver swan, which had a living grace about his movements and a living intelligence in his eyes – watched him swimming about as comfortably and as unconcernedly as if he had been born in a morass instead of a jeweller shop. “

The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain

Sometime ago, before the pandemic, I came across a poem written by local poet Ian Horn, called Fishdance.

The poem traced the journey the river Tees takes through Teasdale, travelling through Barnard Castle, County Durham, reflecting on the history, industry, people, flora and fauna. When I read it, I could hear a watery soundtrack in my head, and I wrote to Ian asking if I could use his poem as a basis for some music. He graciously agreed not knowing what an electronic artist would do to his poem. I asked if he could send me a recording of him reading Fishdance, which he did via his phone, and I began writing The Silver Swan.

Then came the pandemic and we all hibernated and lost touch.

It has been about 7 years since first reading the poem and 6 years since beginning writing and recording tracks.

Sometimes projects sit on my hard drive for a while. It’s as if they need to wait for the right time to be finished and released.

This is one of those projects.
